Our Toolmaking Apprentice Nominated for Learner of the Year

Learner of the Year Nomination

We’re proud to announce that Dylan Simpson, one of our apprentices has been nominated for In-Comm Training’s prestigious “Learner of the Year” award.

Dylan joined Jenks & Cattell Engineering Ltd in 2022 as a Toolmaking Apprentice through In-Comm Training. With consistent growth and a genuine passion for engineering, his nomination is testament to his hard work. Jenks & Cattell Engineering have a great record for progressing budding toolmaking apprentices through the toolmaking apprenticeship scheme.

Through a combination of college learning and hands-on workplace experience, Dylan has developed a solid foundation in core manufacturing skills. Practical experience with CNC machines, milling machines, pillar drills, and radial drills, as well as vital hand-fitting techniques has been gained. These skills are applied directly within a real-world manufacturing environment, helping bridge the gap between theory and practice. He has gained a deeper understanding of both the technical and problem-solving aspects of toolmaking.

Being an Apprentice

Reflecting on his journey so far, Dylan says:

“Attending both college and work has really benefited me. Learning the basics like reading engineering drawings and understanding toolmaking has helped me troubleshoot on my own. I now understand not just how to fix problems, but why they occur.”

Looking ahead, Dylan is keen to move into tool design and project management, building on his current knowledge.

He is supported and mentored by experienced colleagues in the toolroom, who offer valuable guidance and a strong support network to help him grow. Among these mentors is Adrian Muston, an expert in press tooling with years of industry knowledge. Adrian recently became Training and Development Manager, further enhancing the learning environment for apprentices like Dylan.

Advice for the Future: Apprentice to Apprentice

Dylan’s advice for others entering the industry:

“Ask the right questions to the right people and always stay eager to learn. Keep expanding your knowledge and don’t be afraid to make mistakes—it’s one of the best ways to grow and adapt as you take on new challenges.”

As part of the awards process, Dylan will attend a judging day on 5th June, where he’ll showcase his skills, experience, and future ambitions. The final awards ceremony, a black-tie event, will take place on 11th July, where the winner of the 10 finalists will be announced.
